AS F331 jmm chem

match the organic chemistry term to its definition (F331 OCR B)

QuestionAnswer
Alkane? hydrocarbon containing only single bonds
Full structural formula? diagram which shows every bond in an organic chemical
Shortened structural formula? Shows the bonds between carbon atoms and shortens organic groups to CH3 / CH2
Skeletal formula? Contains only lines showing the carbon skeleton of the molecule only.
Name of the shape which describes an alkane? tetrahedral
Bond angle in alkanes? 109
Complete combustion of alkanes? makes carbon dioxide and water
Incomplete combustion of alkanes? makes carbon monoxide and water
Isomerisation? makes a new chemical with the same molecular formula as the starting material, but is now branched.
Reforming? forms cyclic alkanes from straight chain alkanes. Product has the same number of carbons as the starting material but has lost hydrogen
Cracking? Splits long chain alkanes into smaller molecules - some branched, some alkenes
Alkenes? Contain C=C
Arenes? Contain a ring of 6 carbon atoms with alternating double bonds
alcohols? contain an OH group
describe how to name an alkane? 1) identify the longest carbon chain and name it, 2) identify side chains and name them, 3) give the lowest number possible to identify the position of the sidechain. e.g. 2-methylbutane
What are the prefixes used to describe something containing 1 - 10 carbon atoms? meth, eth, prop, but, pent, hex, hept, oct, non, dec.
describe how to name an alcohol? 1) identify the longest carbon chain and name it, 2) identify side chains and name them, 3) give the lowest number possible to identify the position of the sidechain, 4) number the alcohol group to give it the lowest number e.g. 2-methylbutan-1-ol
What is an ether? contains an oxygen atom between 2 carbon atoms

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
