Types of Joints*

Synarthrodial Joints immovable; 2 types: suture( cranial bones) and gomphosis (ockets of teeth)
Ampiarthrodial Joints slightly moveable joints; 3 types: Syndemosis, symphysis, and synchondrosis
syndemosis (ampiarthrodial) joint held together by strong ligamentous structures
symphysis (ampiarthrodial) joint separated by a fibrocartilage pad
sychondrosis (ampiarthrodial) joint separated by hyaline cartilage
Diarthrodial joints freely movable joints; aka synovial joints
Arthrodial joints gliding, plane, characterized by 2 flat, or plane, bony surfaces that butt against each other: ex) carpal bones of wrist, metatarsal joints of foot
Condyloidal Joints aka biaxial ball and socket, bones permits movement in 2 pairs w/o rotation: ex) wrist (radiocarpal joint), between radius and proximal row of carpal bones
