Who were the colonists? People who lived in the colony.
What did the colonists do? They traded with the Native Americans and sold the furs they received to the Dutch West India Company.

How many families originally sailed to New Netherland to set up the colony? 30 families
What was the first permanent European settlement in New York? Fort Orange
When more settlers arrived from the Netherlands, where did they build a fort and what did they call it? They built a fort at the tip of Manhattan and called it Fort Amsterdam.
In 1926, who became governor of New Netherland? Peter Minuit
What was one of the first things that Peter Minuit did? He bought Manhattan Island from Lenni Lenape for tools, beads, and clothing worth $24.
Why was there confusion when Peter Minuit bought the land from Lenni Lenape? Lenni Lenape thought he was being paid only for the resources that were being used by the Dutch.
What were the two main reasons new settlers came to the new colony? Settlers came to farm or to trade furs.
Where was the most important area in New Netherland for fur trading? Fort Orange
To get more people to settle in New Netherland, what did the Dutch West India Company do? It promised large amounts of land to anyone who brought 50 settlers to the colony. The people who owned the land were called patroons.
In 1647, who came the new governor of New Netherland? Peter Stuyvesant
What kind of laws did Peter Stuyvesant create to make life safer? He made laws to make sure that chimneys were built well and kept clean. He also started a kind of police force called the a "rattle watch." He also made peace with the Native Americans.
Why did Stuyvesant treat some of the colonists unfairly? He didn't like their religions, but the Dutch West India Company told him that they must stay. New Netherland became a place where people of many religions could settle.
What explorer first claimed land in the Americas for the Dutch? Henry Hudson
Why did the Dutch build forts in New Netherland? For protection from the Native American attacks
At first, the only way to survive on New Netherland was to trade fur. Eventually, what did the colony start to do? Farm
As the Dutch were settling New Netherland, what other country was starting to form colonies on the east coast of North America? England
How did the Dutch, English, and other Europeans decide to solve the problem of not having enough workers to set up the colonies? They decided to use slaves.
Who were slaves? They were people who were held against their will and forced to work with no pay.
Where did the slaves come from? The slaves were people from the continent of Africa. They were captured and brought there by slave traders.
