inciting incident | the point of action that begins the main or central conflict |
rising action | incidents, events or actions that lead to the climax |
climax | the point where we learn whether or not the character will fail or succeed agains the conflict |
falling action | all conflicts start to end, begins to wrap up the plot |
conclusion | the winding up of the story |
protagonist | the main character who must overcome obstacles |
antoganists | the person or force that opposes the protogonist |
flat character | two dimensional characters that dont have depth or complexion of a person |
round character | characters that seem complex and reveal many traits and appear life-like |
static character | characters who seem the same and do not grow despite expieriencing events |
developing character | characterws who undergo permanent change in some aspect of personality or outlook |
theme | the central idea of the story or what the author want the reader to learn |
mood | the emotional atmosphere of the story |
foreshadowing | occurs when authors gives readers hints of what will happen later on in the story |
irony | the opposing of what is thought to happen |
dialogue | converstation between character |
monologue | a long talk during a story |
alussion | a direct or indirect reference o a familiar place, figure, or event from history |
dilema | a situation where a character must make a difficult choice or dicetion |
simile | a figure of speech in which things are compared using words "like" or "as" |
personification | a figure of speech in which objects are given human qualities |
alliteration | repitition of words with the same beginning sounds |
metaphor | a figure of speech in which those things are compared stating that one thing is another |
onomatopeia | words taht sound like the object or action they refer to |
concrete poems | poetry in which shape or appearence of the poem contributes to the meaning |
picture poem | poem that creates an actual image or form on page usually dire |
ballad poetry | narrative which is often sung with music |
haiku | form of japenese poetry with 5,7,5 syllables |
lyric poetry | a short poem where the speaker has intense personal emotion |
descriptive poetry | involves the 5 sences |
hyperbole | purpisful exageration to create a specific effect |
ambeguity | the condition of admitting 2 or more meanings to a word or idea |
