Arguementation Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Arguement The appeal to reason
Persuasion The method by which a writer moves an audience
Refutation Directly addressing objections that a reasonable person would have against your thesis
Deductive Reasoning Proceeds from a general assumption to a conclusion
Inductive Reasoning Proceeds from individual observations to a general conclusion
Syllogism The basic form of a deductive arguement. Contains a major premise, minor premise, and a conclusion.
Major Premsie Statements that express your reasons or evidence
Claim The main point of the essay
Grounds The material that the writer uses to support the claim
Warrant Connects the claim to the grounds
Assumption The act of taking for granted or supposing
