| Static character | Character who does not change throughout the story |
| Dynamic character | Character who does change throughout the story |
| Stock character | An archetypal character that is seen over and over again in literature |
| Setting | Time and place the story occurs |
| Mood | Emotion created in the reader based on descriptions of concrete objects |
| Conflict | Struggle between two forces |
| External conflict | Struggle between a character and an outside force |
| Internal conflict | Struggle between a character and his/her decisions, opinions, etc. |
| Plot | Series of events in a story |
| Exposition | Sets the tone and mood for the rest of the story by giving background information |
| Conflict | The event that causes problems for the protagonist |
| Rising action | The events leading up to the climax |
| Climax | The high point of interest/action/suspense |
| Falling action | The events after the climax leading up to the resolution |
| Denouement | Resolution; all conflicts are resolved |
