Assonance the repetition of vowel sounds in words. Example: paid, same, make
Consonance the repetition of consonant sounds anywhere in words. Ex: bring back the stack
personification a description of non-human objects or ideas using human characteristics
pun a play on words with similar sounds or on one word with multiple meanings. ex: some say i gave him the boot
symbol an object, person, action, or situation that signifies more than itself
idiom an expression with a meaning different from the literal meaning of the individual words
hyperbole an exaggeration that something either has much more or much less of a quality than it actually has
alliteration the repetition of beginning consonant sounds in words
imagery mental pictures that are created with words
metaphor a comparison of two things without the using like or as
oxymoron a phrase that combines two seemingly contradictory elements
