What is a combining vowel? Used to join root to root & root to suffix. That begins with a consonant, usually use "O"
When is a combining vowel not used? Not used before a suffix that begins with a vowel. vas/o + ectomy= vasectomy.
What happens if the root ends in the same suffix as the suffix? Drop the final vowel from the root and do NOT use a combining vowel. cardi/o + itis=carditis
Most often, a combining vowel is inserted between two roots even when the second root begins with a _____. Vowel. cardi/o + esophag/o + eal= cardioesophageal
Occasionally, when a prefix ends in a vowel and the root begins with a vowel, what happens to the final vowel? The final vowel is dropped from the prefix. para- + enter/o + -al= parenteral.
