| soliloquy | a long speech made by a character that is alone on stage |
| aside | a short speech by a character directed to the audience unknown by other characters |
| paradox | a statement that seems contradictory but may actually be true |
| alliteration | the repetition of initial consonant sounds |
| hyperbole | an extreme exaggeration |
| dramatic irony | when the audience knows something but the characters have not yet realized it |
| tragedy | a play the results in a catastrophe for the main character |
| personification | when a nonhuman object is given human characteristics |
| antagonist | the character or force that is in conflict with the main character |
| plot | the sequence of events that occur |
| foreshadowing | clues in the beginning of a literary piece that hint at things that have not yet occurred |
| dramatic foil | a character who provides contrast to another character |
| theme | a central message or insight into life that is revealed |
| protagonist | the main character |
| symbol | anything that stands for or represents something else |
| setting | the time and place of the action |
