Poetry Vocabulary

biography poem (n.) a poem that describes someone
cinquain (n.) a short poem consisting of five, usually unrhymed lines containing respectively two, four, six, eight and two syllables
free verse (n.) free verse is a form of poetry which refrains from meter patterns and rhyme
haiku (n.) a Japanese poem of 17 syllables arranged in 3 lines of 5,7,5 syllables
tanka (n.) a 5 lined poem with syllables arranged in 5,7,5,7,7
limerick (n.) a 5 lined poem with the rhyme scheme aabba; usually meant to be funny and usally contains hyperbole and onomatopoeia
tone (n.) the author's attitude towards the subject
mood (n.) the feeling the reader gets from the passage
concrete poem (n.) a poem that is a certain shape and the interpretation is written inside
pictogram poem (n.) a poem written in a relevant shape
parallel poem (n.) poems using repetitive lines
