| figurative language | expressions that are not meant to be taken word for word (types; simile, metaphor, personificatoin, hyperbole) |
| hyperbole | exaggeration of an idea for emphasis |
| dramatic irony | the audience is aware of something that a character in the story is not |
| oxymoron | two opposing words put side by side for emphasis |
| parady | a humerous imitation of a piece of literature |
| indirect characterization | description of a character through that character's words or actions |
| direct characterization | description of a character through the narrator's specific words |
| dialect | the type of language used in certain regions of the county or world |
| foil | two characters who are so opposite that they make one another stand out |
| tragedy | literature that ends with death |
| tragic hero | a character who dies because of his own flaws |
| hamartia | the main flaw within a tragic hero |
| idiom | an expression or saying that is only understood based on regional knowledge |
| soliloquy | a speech given in a play by one character to express feelings |
