Understanding different techniques used in poetry

A comparison of two things using the word 'like' or 'as'. Simile
Comparing two things by stating that one thing is something it is not. Metaphor
Two or more words close together that start with the same letter. Alliteration
Two words or more close together with the same vowel sound. Assonance
The use of an image or object to suggest something else. Symbolism

Describing an inanimate object as having human characteristics. Personification
