Poetry terms

| Metaphor | Direct comparison of two unlike things. |
| Simile | Comparison of two unlike things using the words “like” or “as”. |
| Personification | The giving of human qualities to an inanimate object. |
| Onomatopoeia | Word or group of words that imitate the sound it’s describing. |
| Symbol | A concrete idea (object, person, place, etc.) that stands for an abstract one (love, freedom, democracy, etc.). |
| Hyperbole | The use of exaggeration; not a literal translation of the phrase; meant for effect. |
| Analogy | A similarity between like features of two things, on which a comparison maybe based |
| Allusion | A reference in a literary work to a person, place, or thing in history or another work of literature; a type of metaphor. |
| Mood | The poem’s atmosphere the poet creates. |
| Tone | The speaker’s feelings/emotions; may fluctuate within the poem, this will vary due to a poem’s particular length. |
| Rhyming couplet | Two successive lines in poetry that rhyme. |
| End rhyme | Rhyme that takes place at the end of lines, successive or not; this determines a poem’s rhyme scheme. |
| Internal rhyme | Rhyme that takes place within a line of poetry. |
| Meter | The pattern of rhythm in a poem. |
| Alliteration | Repeated consonant sounds at the beginnings of words in the same phrase. |
| Assonance | Repeated vowel sounds in words in the same phrase. |
| Consonance | Repeated consonant sounds within words in the same phrase. |
| Lyric poetry | Poetry that is relatively short and relates an emotion. |
| Sonnet | A poem that utilizes 14 lines and a specific rhyme scheme. |
| Quatrain | Four lined stanza; common in poetry. |
| Imagery | Poetry refers to the visual sense an author is attempting to create. |
| Rhythm | Poetry refers to the “beat” an author is attempting to create. |
| Melody | Poetry refers to the auditory (hearing) sense an author is attempting to create. |
| Denotation | The dictionary definition or surface meaning of a word. |
| Connotation | The emotional associations that accompany a word. |
| Theme | Author’s message of the work; sometimes is the main idea, a moral (Aesop’s fables); usually a universal message. |
| Voice | The speaker of the poem. |
