Literary terms
| Question | Answer |

| Point-of-view | the eyes of perspective through which the story is told |
| First Person Point of View | cahracter tells the story about himself (usually using "I") |
| Third Person Limited point of view | Story is told by an observer about someone else |
| Third Person Omniscient | story is told by a narrator who knows ALL characters' thoughts and feelings |
| Simile | Compare using "like" or "as" EX: My teacher is like an ogre; she is so mean. |
| Metaphor | A comparison between two things that says something IS something else. Ex: My son can run so fast that he is a cheetah. |
| Personification | giving HUMAN qualities to something NOT human Ex: The wind whispered in my ear. |
| Alliteration | repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words close together (tongue twister). Ex: Sally sold seashells by the seashore. |
| Imagery | Mind pictures created through the use of the five senses. |
| Allusion | Reference to the Bible, history, art, or culture. |
| Hyperbole | Intentional exaggeration for effect. Ex: I've told you this a million times. |
| Tone | Attitude of the writer or speaker towards his subject |
| Symbol | something that stands for something else Ex: heart-stand for love |
| Irony | Difference between what is expected to happen and what happens |
| Dramatic Irony | Audience knows something the characters do not |
| Verbal Irony | saying one thing, but meaning the opposite-SARCASM: I'm so glad you didn't bring a pencil again today so I could give you my pencil! |
| Conflict | the problem in the story |
| Internal conflict | conflict WITHIN the character |
| External conflict | conflict with some OUTSIDE force |
| Setting | time and place of story |
| Protagonist | Main character of story |
| Antagonist | Main character's opposition |
| Soliloquy | Long speech by character ALONE on stage (reveals inner thoughts) |
| Monologue | Long speech by character TO other characters |
| Aside | Words spoken by character to the audience. Other characters can not "hear" what is said. (freeze frame) |
| Thesis Statement | Main idea of ENTIRE paper (found in introduction) |
| Plagiarism | using someone else's ideas as your own; not citing or giving credit |
| Parentheical citation/In-text citation | Documenting source where the information taken from (Chapman 13). MUST follow a QUOTE |
| Source | Materials where you find your information (INTERNET, MAGAZINES, Books, etc.) |
| Works Cited | list of all your sources at end of paper in alphabetical order |
