Portable Fire Extinguishers

What is the standard for fire extinguishers that dictates how many extinguishers/mounting brackets must be carried on a pumping apparatus....and how many are required? A-NFPA 1901, two approved portable fire extinguishers.
What are the required ratings for extinguishers on a pumping apparatus? A-PW at 2A-2.5 gallons, dry chem is 80BC, and CO2 is 10BC
What are the three mechanisms that an extinguisher uses to expel it’s agent? A-Manual pump, stored pressure, pressure cartridge
What is sometimes added to water extinguishers to increase their effectiveness? A-Class A foam concentrate
Wet chemical stored pressure extinguishers...what agent is used to cool and suppress fires in unsaturated cooking oils? A-special potassium based, alkaline agent
These extinguishers are not suitable for Class c or d fuels and are not suitable for tree dimensional fires such as fuel flowing down from an elevated point? They are most effective on static pools of flammable liquids. A-AFFF extinguishers
CO2 extinguishers are most effective in extinguishing which classes of fire? A-class b and c.
What are the two basic designs for handheld dry chem extinguishers? A-cartridge operated and stored pressure
On class D fires how thick of a layer of powder should be applied? A-1 to 2 inches.
The extinguisher classification and numerical rating system is based upon tests conducted by what agency? A-Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and Underwriters Laboratories of Canada(ULC)
What is the range of Class A extinguisher ratings? A- 1A-40A. Each unit represents 1 1/4 gallons.
What is the range of Class B extinguisher ratings? A- 1B through 640B....each unit represents approximately 1 sq ft.
What is the extinguishing action of Class K extinguishers? A-They must be capable of saponifying (converting the fatty acids or fats to soap or foam). They work by suppressing the vapors and smothering the fire.
What area must a class K fire be able to extinguish? A-2.25 square feet.
What should be inspected on an extinguisher immediately before use? A-external condition (no apparent damage), hose/nozzle (in place), weight (feels as though it contains agent), pressure gauge (in operable range).
What NFPA section applies to fire extinguishers? A-NFPA 10
NFPA 10 dictates that extinguishers should be inspected how often? A-At least 1x a year to ensure that they are accessible and operable.
Who is responsible for servicing the portable fire extinguisher? A-Property owner or building occupant.
Obsolete inverting type fire extinguishers were required to be out of service by when? January 1982.
Halogen agents were required to be terminated by when? A-2000
Halon 1211 has been replaced by what agent? A-FE-36 hexafluoropropane.
