| irony | A contrast between ehat is expected and reality |
| verbal irony | When the speaker says one thing but means another |
| situational irony | When what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected |
| dramatic irony | When the reader or audience knows something important that a character doesn't know |
| myth | An anonymous, traditional story that is basically religious in nature, and that explains a belief or natural phenomenon |
| onomatopoeia | The use of a word whose sound suggests its meaning. Ex: buzz, crackel |
| pun | A play on the multiple meanings of a word. Ex: "When is a Doctor most Annoyed?" "When he runs out of patience" |
| satire | a type of writing that makes fun of human weakness to bring about a change |
| soliloquy | a long speech made by one character |
| sonnet | a 14 line lyric poem |
| suspense | the uncertainty or anxiety the reader feelsa about what will happen next in the story |
| trickster tale | a type of folktale that features a character called a trickster that is usually a small animal |
