Literary Terms # 1

QuestionAnswer
First Person Point of View To give the innermost thoughts and or experiences of the narrator.
Second Person Point of View In second person point of view, the narrator tells the story to another character using "you"
Third Person Point of View The narrator, who is not a part of the story, zooms into the thoughts and feelings of one of the characters.
Omniscient Point of View/ All-Knowing The narrator knows about all the characters in the story
Conflict A struggle between opposing forces.
Irony When the opposite of what is expected happens.
Verbal Irony To say the opposite of what is expected.
Dramatic Irony When the reader knows what has happened before the character does.
Sarcasm To say the opposite of what is expected to insult.
Satire Writing that ridicules.
Anecdote A brief story that is told to teach a lesson.
Author's Purpose The reason that an author writes.
Types of Purpose To inform, entertain, and to persuade.
Man versus Man This conflict involves two individuals.
Man versus Himself This conflict involves only one individual.
Man versus Society This is a conflict that involves one individual and a group.
Man versus Nature This is a conflict that involves one individual and an act of nature.
Pun The play on the multiple meanings of words
Theme The main topic of a piece of writing
Types of themes Love, Aging, Hate, Death, Relationship, Bravery, Appearance, versus Reality, and Attitude to Power and Authority
