various language terms for third graders

QuestionAnswer
Setting where and when the story takes place
Plot The problem in the story
Author's Purpose Why did the author write it
Sequence Putting events in order (remember your time and order words, such as next, first,last.. also questions can put information in sequence chart
Fact and Opinion Fact can be proven true and opinion is one's belief, feelings, or thoughts
Cause and Effect cause answers the question why? And effect answers the question what happened? (questions may use words like, because ,what happened, and why)
Contex Clues Words or senteces aroun an unfamiliar word that can show meaning of that word
Details Information from the story (you can find the answers to these questions by putting your finger on it)
Graphic Aids Any kind of picture, such as a map, graph, diagram,chart,advertisment,form...
Predicting Outcome A guess about the story based on facts that are already known.
Main Idea what is the passage or paragraph about? (questions will include words like mainly about ant mostly about)
Summary A summary is a short statement of the most important information in a text. It should describe most of the main ideas.
Antonyms Words with opposite meanings
Author The person who wrote the story
Autobiography something an author has written about his or her own life
biography something an author has written about the life of another person
cause the reason something happens
character a person or an animal that does the actions in the story or poem
compare to tell how two or more things are alike
conflict a problem the characters in the story have
contrast to tell how two or more things are different
drama a story people act out on stage or in front of a camera
effect what happens as a result of a cause
fable a story that oftens has animals as characters and teachers a lesson
fact a detail or an idea that everyone agrees on
fairy tale a made-up story for children with imaginary characters and magical events
fiction a type of writing that tells about made-up or imaginary people, places, and events
first-person point of view a type of point of view in which the narrator is a character in the story. Stories in the first person use the pronoun I to tell the story
folktale a type of story that is passed down from one person to another over time. Magical events somtimes happen.
Historical details infromation about the real events that happened in the past
homographs words that are spelled the same but said differently
homonyms words that are spelled and said the same but have different meanings
homophones words that sound alike but have different meanings. Homophones often have different spellings too.
humorous poetry a type of poem that tells about a funny moment
inference a judgment a reader makes based on both the details in the pasage and the reader's own experiences
