What are the penalties for a service technician who violates provisions of the clean air act? -fined 27,500 -lose certification -may be required to appear in Federal court
What does CFC stand for? chlorine - flourine - carbon
Greatest effect of CFC is where the stratosphere, conatining the ozone layer
Ozone is made of what type and number of atoms? Three oxygen atoms (o3)
What breaks an ozone molecule down? Chlorine.
How does Chlorine break down ozone? It steals one of the oxygen atoms, creating Chlorine Monoxide (CIO) and Oxygen (O2). The Chlorine Monxoide molecule then attacks another ozone molecule. Creating a chain reation that leaves only the single Chlorine atom.
How much damage can the Chlorine atom do to ozone molecules? The Chlorine atom can destroy as many as 100,000 ozone molecules.
What does Stratospheric Ozone protect us from? -ultraviolet radiation -regulates the earth's temperature
The Montreal Protocol calls for? A producation phase out of CFC's
checking cylinder of HFC-134a for non-condesable gases at 70 degree F - pressure should not exceed what? 76 psi
Sec. 609 of Fed. Clean air act mandates all people servicing motor vehicle AC must -use EPA approved Equip. -be certified in recovery procedures -never intentially vent refrigerant (oops!)
Recovery Cylinders must have what sort of certification -UL or -DOT approved
After charging a system using manifold gauages, refrigerant in the hoses... must be recovered
After initial recovery procedures, the technician should... wait 5 minutes to determine if the system returns to a positive pressure
If additional recovery is required after the initial recovery procedure, repeat the recovery process untile the A/C system vacuum remains stable for 2 min.
If retrofitting a MVAC system, the replacment refrigerant MUST be _ approved EPA-SNAP approved
Prior to recharging a system with recycled refrigerant, the refrigerant should be checked for... non-condensables
What must be located within 12" (30 cm) of the end of a service hose? shut-off valves
What must you do when disposing of an empty/near empty DISPOSABLE cylinder? -attach cylinder to the recovery unit -reduce the cylinder to a vacuum -mark the cylinder empty
Before transferring recycled refigerant into an empty storage cylinder, the cylinder should first be... evacuated to at least 27" hg
To ensure that recovery cylinders are not filled above 80% of their capacity and the safe filling capacity...this can be controlled by -mechanical float devices -electrong shut-offs or -weight (scales)
REFILLABLE cylinders used to transport recovered refigerants MUST... -be DOT approved -be properly labeled and tagged -be hydrostatically tested every 5 years
Depletion of the ozone layer causes... -increased eye disease -skin cancer -crop loss -deforestation -reduced marine life -increased ground level ozone
NEVER expose CFC-12 or CFC-22 to open flame because they may form... -hydrocholoric acid -hydrofluoric acid -phosgene gas
Define RECOVER... remove refrigerant in any condition from a system and store in it an external container
When operating recovery or recycling equipment you should... -wear safety glasses -wear proective gloves -follow all safety precautions for the equpment
Define RECYCLE... clean refigeratant for reuse by oil separation and passes through moisture absorption device.
Define RECLAIM... process refrigerant to a level equal to new product specs as determined by chemical analysis
Under what conditions may you use a DISPOSABLE cylinder to recover refrigerant? NEVER

RECLAIMED Refrigerant -must meet standards of ARI 700-93 (Air conditioning and Refrigeration institute -is intended for Sale and may be used in any application
RECOVERY Cylinders are designed to be? refilled
What two ports must recovery cylinders have? -one vapor -one liquid
To reduce chance of over pressuraization/heating/explosion of recovery cylinders it cannot be filled... -above 80% of its capacity by weight &-the filling level be controlled by mechanical float devices, shut off or weight
To remove non-condesable gases A recovery cylinder must be emptied to what prior to transferring recycled refrigerant into an empty storage cyclinder. must be evacuated to at least 27in. HG of vacuum.
3 things required for refillable cylinders -be UL or DOT approved -be hydrostatically tested -date stamped every 5 years
What does the Department of Transportations require you to attached to cylinders used for refrigerant when transporting them? -attachd DOT classification tags on each cylinder -place a refrigerant label on each cylinder
refillable cylinders used for transporting RECOVERED pressurized refrigerant must be.. DOT approved
All refrigerant recovery cylinders should be inspected for... rust
If rust is found on refrigerant recovery cylinders... -should be redueced to 0 psig -discarded
To see procedures for each state Check with the DOT and EPA for... special shipping procedures to be followed in each state based on the CLASSIFICATION of used refrigerant.
When disposing of empty/near empty cylinders.. -refrigerant MUST be recovered -attached to recovery unit & remove -once reduced from pressure to a vaccum, mark empty and ready for disposal
What gase can be used in an alternate method of leak testing? Nitrogen (an inert gas)
How to use Nitrogen to leak test? -use Nitrogen to pressurize the system -pin-point leaks with soap & water solution
If dry nitrogen from a cylinder is us in a service procedure what must you do? -always charge through a pressure regulator -have a pressure relief valve installed downstream from the regulator
What must you NEVER pressurize a system with? -Oxygen -Compressed air
Why must you never pressurize a system with oxygen or compressed air? -if mixed with refrigerants & lubricants these can cause an explosion
What should you always review when working with solvents, chemicals or refrigerants the material safety date sheets
What should you do in the even of a large release of refrigerant in a confined area? IMMEDIATELY VACATE & VENTILATE the area
Inhaling refrigerants can cause... -heart irregularities -unconsciousness -oxygen deprivation leading to DEATH!!!!
CFC-12 can NEVER be exposed to.. -open flames or -hot glowing surfaces
At high temperatures R-12 will form -hydrochloric acid -hydropfluoric acid -Phosgene gas (change from 12 to 22)
Hygroscopic oil has an affinity for... moisture absorption. Therefore the use of XH-7 or XH-9 deciccant (drier) is necessary
