Kinetic theory All matter consists of tiny particles that are in constant motion
Gas pressure Results from the force exerted by a gas per unit surface area of an object
Vacuum Empty space with no particles and no pressure
Barometer A device that is used to measure atmospheric pressure
Pascal (Pa) SI unit of pressure
Standard atmosphere The pressure required to support 760mm ofmercury in a mercury barometer at 25 degrees C
Vaporization Conversion of a liquid into a gas or vapor
Evaporation Vaporization on the top of nonboiling water
Vapor pressure A mesaure of the force exerted by a gas above a liquid
Boiling point Temperature at which the vapor pressure of the liquid is just equal to the external pressure on the liquid
Normal boiling point Boiling point of a liquid at a pressure of 101.3kPa
Melting point Temperature at which solid changes into a liquid
Crystal A solid in which the atoms, ions, or molecules are arranged in a n orderly, repeating, 3-D pattern
Unit Cell Smallest group of particles within a crystal that retains the gerometric shape of the crystal
Allotropes Two or more forms of the same element in the same physical form
Amorphous solid Solid that lacks an ordered internal structure
Glass A transparent fusion product of inorganic substances that have cooled to a rigid state without crystallizing
