Dentogingival Jnctn

QuestionAnswer
What is the dentogingival junction? the junction between the gingival epithelium and the tooth surface
What is the clinical significance of the Dentogingival junction? If disturbed by plaque, the underlying CT and periodontum(bone,cementum,+PDL) are exposed to the microorganisms and periodontial disease ensues which could lead to the death of the tooth
What are the 3 phases of dentogingival junction formation? 1. Pre-eruption, 2.Eruption 3.Post-Eruption
What happens in the Pre-Eruption Phase of Dentogingival junction formation? REE forms/ condenses
What happens in the Eruption Phase of Dentogingival Junction formation? fusion of REE and oral epithelium as well as their respective basal laminae
What happens in the Post-Eruption Phase of the dentogingival junction formation? complete fusion of REE and oral epithelium into junctional epithelium (a basal lamina separates the new junctional epithelium from the tooth surface)
How does the "Touching" morphology occur Touching occurs when the epithelium of the crown is retained while the root looses its---a perfect edge to edge relationship btwn enamel and cementum is established
How does the "Gapping" morphology occur Gapping occurs when the epithelial root sheeth does not initially degenerate leaving no cementum but naked dentin;
How does the "Overlapping" morphology occur overlapping occurs when the cervical REE breaks down along with the epithelial root sheath and cementoblast cover the exposed enamel.
2 subdivisions of the dentogingival epithelium? 1. sulcular epithelium 2.Junctional Epithelium
What is sulcular epithelium? free gingiva, separated from tooth by sulcus 0.5 mm deep
How is junctional epithelium held to the enamel layer? A basal lamina is secreted over the enamel to allow hemidesmosomes to attach the epithelium to the tooth surface
How many basal lamina(BMS) are present in the junctional epithelium? 2
how do these multiple membranes of the junctional epithelium come about? Through fusion of the REE and oral epithelium
what is free gingiva? Free gingiva extends down to the end of the sulcus (closest layer to teeth)
What is Attached gingiva? attached gingiva is attached to alveolar bone;
What is the mucogingival junction? the mucogingival junction is the junction between the attached gingiva and the alveolar mucosa
The rich vascularization of the gingiva around the cervix of the tooth is supplied by vessesls from 3 regions. What are they? 1. PDL 2.Alveolar bone 3.Periosteum of the cortical plates ****bleeding occurs easily in this location with the slightest inflammatory state or plaque accumulation*****
