Be able to explain the encounter between Odysseus and the Cyclops. Give details like: How many men were eaten (6), how were Odysseus and his men trapped, what was Odysseus's plan of escape, What did Odysseus do to the Cyclops, what mistake does Odysseus make once they board the ships, etc.
Be able to explain the encounter between the Suitors and Odysseus when he returns to his homeland of Ithaca. Give details! Who does he work with? What is the plan? What is the contest that Penelope conducts to choose a suitor? How does Odysseus reveal himself? Who is killed? What is the outcome?
Antinous is: the arrogant leader of the Suitors who are trying to marry Penelope.
Telemachus is: the son of Odysseus.
Athena is: the Goddess of Wisdom who helps Odysseus defeat the Suitors by disguising him as an old beggar.
What do the Sirens do? Sing songs that attract sailors to the deaths.
Alcinous is: (don't confuse with Altinous) Phaecian King who gives Odysseus a ship and men to finally return to Ithaca. Who Odysseus is telling this story to from the very beginning.
Poseidon is: The God of the Sea. Also the Cyclops's (Polyphemus)father who prevents Odysseus from getting home.
What did Circe do to Odysseus's remaining men? She turned them into swine, but then turned them back to their human form.
Polyphemus is: the Cyclops that is blinded by Odysseus. Also prayed to his father, Poseidon, to make Odysseus's journey home long and difficult.
Zeus is: the ruler of all gods in Greek mythology.
Penelope is: Odysseus's wife.
The author of "The Odyssey" is: Homer
What event killed the last of Odysseus's men? A storm created by Zeus to punish Odysseus for killing Helios's prized cattle.
The name of the island that Odysseus calls home: Ithaca
The number of years the war at Troy lasted: 10 years
Know who says this quote: "Sweet coupled airs we sing. No lonely seafarer holds clear of entering our mirror." Hint: They sing beautiful songs that attract men to their deaths.
Know who said this: "What evil wind blew in this pest? Nudge my table, will you? Egyptian whips are sweet to what you'll come to here, you nosing rat, making your pitch to everyone!" Hint: The leader of the Suitors at Ithaca.
Know who says this: "Where shall a man find sweetness to surpass his own home and his parents? In far lands he shall not, though he find a house of gold." Hint: The soldier of the Trojan War who is trying to make his way home to Ithaca.
Know who said this: "Do not rage at me, Odysseus! Forgive me, don't be angry. I could not welcome you with love on sight! I armed myself long ago against the frauds of men...but here and now, what sign could be so clear as this of our own bed?" Hint: She never gave up hope that her husband was still alive after being away for 20 years.
Know who said this: "You cannot be my father Odysseus! Meddling spirits conceived this trick to twist the knife in me!" Hint: The son of Odysseus.
How did the Sirens kill sailors? Their singing lured their ships to deathly waters.
What did the Scylla eat? humans
Did Odysseus's men make parts of the voyage home more difficult than it should've been? Yes, they released the bag of winds and they stayed too long on the beach of the Cicones, leading to many deaths.
What is Charybdis? the whirlpool that Odysseus and his men must navigate past
What is an epic? a long narrative poem about a hero's adventures
How does Circe both curse and help Odysseus and his men? turns his men to swine, then turns them back and gives Odysseus advice about what's to come next.
Be able to provide and discuss different examples of death in the story. Must provide AT LEAST 5 examples and explain them with details.
How does Odysseus keep the Cyclops, Polyphemus, from getting the other cyclopes to help him? By telling the Cyclops that his name was "Nohbdy".
