Lesson 14 Spelling: Poetry

QuestionAnswer
rhyme Sounds that are alike at the end of words.
meter Measured pattern of the rhythm of a poem; the arrangement of beats in a line of poetry.
simile Comparison of two things using the words "like" or "as".
couplet Two lines of poetry that usually rhyme.
personification A description of an animal or object as if it were human or had human qualities.
haiku A three-line poem in which there are five, seven, and five syllables per line.
metaphor A direct comparison of two unlike things WITHOUT using "like or "as".
alliteration Repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words.
onomatopoeia Use of words whose sounds suggest their meaning; a word that imitates the sound of something.
sonnet A poem with 14 lines written in a certain meter and with a special rhyme scheme.
