Force and Motion

study materials for test

speed distance an object travels divided by the time it took to travel that distance
velocity speed in a certain direction
acceleration a change in velocity; can include speeding up, slowing down or changing direction
unbalanced force unequal forces that are needed to change the motion of an object
balanced force equal forces that do not allow motion to occur
force a push or a pull; expressed in Newtons
friction a force that goes against motion to cause an object to slow down or stop
inertia the tendency of objects to resist a change in their motion; an object at rest wants to stay at rest, an object in motion wants to stay in motion
simple machine device that reduces the force or effort needed to do a task or changes the direction of force needed to perform the task
inclined plane reduces force needed when angle of incline is reduced
pulley simple machine that reduces effort force needed to move an object
