Raisin in the Sun - Durst - 2011

Know the following about Langston Hughes: Poet. Wrote during the Harlem Renaissance (1920's - 30's). Poem is included at the beginning of "Raisin in the Sun" and speaks of 'dreams deferred' (put off til later).
Langston Hughes biographical info: raised mostly by grandmother, one of the first black writers to make a living solely from writing and one of the greatest poets who ever lived.
Know the following about the playwright, Lorraine Hansberry: Wrote, "Raisin in the Sun". Died at 35 years of age from cancer. Attended University of Wisconsin and others; had no children.
The setting of "Raisin in the Sun": Southside of Chicago, sometime between 1950's-1960's. Mainly in the family's small apartment.
Facts about Lena (Walter and Beneatha's mother): Husband dies waiting for a check in the mail, loves to garden, religious.
Facts about Ruth (Walter's wife): pregnant and considers abortion; does not want family to give up the dream about owning a new house after Walter loses the rest of the money to Willy.
Facts about Walter: He wants to own a liquor store and loses $6500 of the insurance money when he trusts Willy to invest it for him for the liquor store purchase; loses his job as a chauffeur; dreams of having/giving nice things for his family.
Facts about Travis (Walter and Ruth's son): asks for money for his teacher at the start of the play; sleeps in the living room; plays with rats; wants to work in a grocery store.
What does Travis buy Momma (Lena)? a large-brimmed hat for gardening
Who insults George Murchison's(Beneatha's rich boyfriend)clothes and schooling? Walter
Walter calls Mr. Lindner (white man from the housing development)to come over after he loses the $6500. Does he take the buy-out money for the house? No. He tells Mr. Lindner that they intend on moving in and will try to be good neighbors.
How much is the insurance check that Momma (Lena) is set to receive from her husband's life insurance pay-out? $10,000
What does Momma end up using some of the insurance money for? putting a down payment on a home in a white neighborhood to escape the ghetto conditions they currently live in.
Who shares Momma's dream of home ownership? Ruth
What is Beneatha's dream? to be a doctor. She also loves to try new things and wants to play guitar.
Who are Beneatha's boyfriends? George Murchison - wealthy, educated, wants her to assimilate. Asagai - from Nigeria, Africa, does NOT want her to assimilate, asks her to marry him and move to Africa after she becomes a doctor.
What is Beneatha's nickname? Alaiyo - means, "one for whom bread-food-is not enough"
Assimilation means: trying to fit into the dominant culture. An assimilationist in the play means a black person trying to fit into the white culture.
What is a "restrictive covenant"? a real estate term used when buying a home that allows certain restrictions (limitations that prevent certain actions).
