Literature Terms

QuestionAnswer
Antagonist The character or force causing problems for the protagonist
Protagonist The main character. The character all the action happens around.
Plot The events in the story
Conflict The problem
Internal Conflict A problem happening inside someone. (Thoughts or feelings) -man vs. self
External Conflict A problem outside of the character. -man versus man -man versus society -man versus nature
Characterization How the author describes a character. -Appearance (looks) -What the character says -What the character does -What others say to and about the character
Setting The place and time where the story happens.
Point of View Who is telling the story.
1st Person point of View When a character in the story is telling you what happened.
3rd Person Point of View When a narrator who is not a character in the story is telling you what happened.
Genre The kind of literature it is. -Sports Literature -Fantasy -Mystery -Realistic Fiction -Graphic Novel
Mood The feeling the text makes readers feel. -sad -tense -romantic -eerie
Tone The attitude the author has towards the topic of the text. -angry -humorous -curious
Author's Purpose The reason the author wrote the piece. -Persuade -Inform -Entertain
Theme The message or lesson of a piece. It is usually not said, so the reader has to figure it out.
Foreshadow A hint at what will happen in the future of the story. Creates suspense
Flashback A pause to look back as something that happened in a character's past.
Dialogue The words spoken by the characters. " "
Dialect The accent a character uses, or how they form their sentences. Tells the reader a lot about the setting, and about the character's lifestyle.
