| duress | a threat of harm forcing someone to act against his or her will | Some bullies will duress other kids to doing their homework |
| irk | to annoy; to irritate | My sister is irksome when we don't get along. |
| ratify | to approve formally; to sanction | To become a law a law must be ratifyed. |
| sobriety | 1. a seriousness in manner 2. a state of abstinance from drugs or alcohol | People under the age of 21 may break the law by not being sobrieic |
| stagnate | to become inactive or motionless | If someone looks at Medusa they will turn to stone and become stagnate. |
| subordinate | of lower importance or rank; subject to the control of another | My sister is subordinate to me because I am older. |
| talon | a claw of a bird of pray or similar animal | The hawk swooped down and grabbed the mouse with its talon. |
| taut | pulled, drawn, or streched tight | In a fierce game of tug of war the line was taut. |
