Chemical Equation A representation, with symbols and formulas, of the identites and relative amounts of the reactants and products in a chemical reaction
Coefficient A small whole number that appears in front of a formula in a chemical equation
Precipitate A solid that is produced as a result of a chemical reaction in a solution and that separates from the solution
Reversible Reaction A chemical reaction in which the products re-form the original reactants
Generic Equation An equation that uses symbols or letters (A,B,C,D) to represent chemical substances in a reaction
Combustion Reaction A reaction in which a hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen, releasing energy in the form of light and heat
Decomposition Reaction A reaction in which a single compound produces two or more simpler substances
Double-Replacement Reaction A reaction in which the ions of two compounds exchange places in an aqueous solution to form two new compounds
Synthesis Reaction A reaction in which two or more substances combine to form a new compound
Single-Replacement Reaction A reaction in which one element replaces a similar element in a compound
Activity Series A list of elements organized according to the ease with which the elements undergo certain chemical reactions
Particle Diagram A diagram that shows the atoms and the bonding involved when atoms are rearranged during a chemical reaction
Diatomic element atoms that exist in pairs due to electron sharing Br I N Cl H O F
Reactant substance(s) on the left side of the reaction equation
Product substance(s) on the right side of the reaction equation
Subscript the small numbers that indicate how many of each type of atom are in the molecule
coefficient the large number written in front of a chemical formula that tells how many of that particle there are
state of matter solid, liquid, gas, or aqueous
aqueous solution a substance that has been dissolved in water
Law of Conservation of Mass atoms cannot be created or destroyed during a chemical reaction
balanced equation an chemical reaction equation that includes coefficients
hydrocarbon a compound that contains hydrogen and carbon
solubility how well a substance dissolves in water
net ionic equation an equation where only the ions involved in the formation of a new substance are shown
