Oxidation Number A number assigned to an atom in a molecular compound or molecular ion that indicates the general distribution of electrons
Oxidation State A number assigned to an atom in a molecular compound or ion that indicates the general distribution of electrons among the bonded atoms
Formula Mass The sum of the average atomic masses of all the atoms represented in the formula of any molecule, formula unit, or ion
Percent Composition The percentage by mass of each element in a compound
Empirical Formula The symbols for the elements combined in a compound with subscripts showing the smallest whole-number mole ration of the different atoms in the compound
mole amount of substance equal to Avagadro's number, 6.02 x 10 ^23
molar mass the mass of one mole of a pure substance
chemical formula formula that indicates the relatve numbers of atoms of each kind in a chemical compound by using atomic symbols and numerical subscripts
polyatomic ion a charged group of covalently bonded atoms
molecular formula a formula showing the types and numbers of atoms combined in a single molecule of a compound
