Literary Terms

QuestionAnswer
Allegory An extended metaphor in which characters and ideas represent abstract concepts, such as death/knowledge
Allusion A figure of speech that references to art, event, or figure, way o placing one's poem with context in economical fashion.
Antagonist the character (or force) that opposes the protaganist
Characterization developement of characters throughout the story
Climax [in Drama] point where rising action turns to falling action and [in Fiction] moment of great intensity/conflict
Conflict Antagonism between a character and the outside world or themself
Diction A writers selection of words
Exposition Informing reader of what has previously happened "sets up the story"
Falling Action Action after climax, tension lessens, and moves toward catastrophe or denouement
Foil Character who displays traits of protagonist or another important person.
Foreshadowing words, gestures, or other actions that suggest future events or outcomes.
Genre type or form of literature (which are later divided into subcategories)
Imagery Language in literature that involves the senses
Irony Tone that suggests what reality is is worse than what is seems to be.
Mood general feeling towards topic
Motif What drives a character to act in a particular way
Narrator particular view of story in 1st person (story teller/observer is in 3rd)
Personification figure of speech in where an inanimate object is treated with human like characteristics.
Plot the sequence of major events usually related to cause/effect
Point of view angle or vision on which the story is presented
Protagonist Lead character
Resolution Satisfying outcome that ends conflict
Rising action tense complicated action lading up to the climax
Setting time/place/culture/atmosphere where story takes place
Simile expression that uses direct similarity (like, than, just like, etc.)
Stream of consciousness characters point of view
Style diction, syntax, other features chosen by author
Symbol something that stands for something else
Theme general repeated concept
Tone Implied attitude toward subject and reader
