QuestionAnswer
Hyperbole exaggerating some part of your statement in order to give it emphasis or focus
Understatement a rhetorical form in which the force of a descriptive state is less than what one would normally expect
Litotes similar to understatement, emphasizes its point b using a word opposite to the condition
Antithesis uses contrast in language to bring out a contrast in ideas
Hypophora technique of asking a question, then proceeding to answer it
Rhetorical Question technique of asking a question and implying an answer
Procatalepsis deals specifically with objections, and it usually does so without even asking the question
Distinctio the writer elaborates on the definition of a word, to make sure there is o misunderstanding
Simile device in which the writer compares two things that are already somewhat related, usually using like or as
Metaphor speaks of one thing as though it actually were another
Analogy makes use of something already well known to explain something that is less well known
Allusion reference to some fairly well-known event, place, or person
Eponym referring to a specific famous person to link his or her attributes

Exemplum providing your reader with an example to illustrate your point
Climax organizing ideas so that they proceed from the least to the most important
Parallelism using the same general structure for multiple parts of a sentence, or for multiple sentences, in order to link them all
Chiasmus special form of parallelism that flips the original form around
Anadiplosis takes last word of a sentence or phrase and repeats it hear the beginning of the next sentence or phrase
Conduplicatio takes an important word from anywhere in one sentence or phrase and repeats it near the beginning of the next sentence or phrase
Metabasis device used to sum up a body of work that has come before, so that you can move on to a new point
Parenthesis device used to insert an aside or additional information into the main flow of your writing
Apostrophe rhetorical device in which the writer breaks out of the flow of the writing to directly address a person or personified object
Enumeratio act of supplying a list of details about something
Antanagoge way of ordering points to down play negative points so that they reader feels less strongly about them
Epithet attaching a descriptive adjective to a noun to bring a scene to life or evoke a particular idea or emotion
