12 Poem Types and their vocabulary

| limerick | a five lined humorous poem with a distinct rhythm and rhyme pattern |
| simile | a comparison between two unlike things using like or as |
| metaphor | a comparison between two unlike things without using like or as |
| extended simile | a comparison between two unlike things that continues throughout an entire poem |
| imagery | a representation of anything we can see, hear, taste, or smell |
| personification | when a nonhuman thing or quality is talked about as if it were human |
| haiku | a 3 line non-rhyming poem that has syllables which number 5-7-5 |
| alliteration | the repetition of consonant sounds |
| assonance | the repetition of vowel sounds |
| onomatopoeia | using a word whose sound imitates or suggests its meaning |
| free verse | uses no regular meter or rhyme but instead imitates the natural rhythms of speech |
| narrative peotry | peotry that tells a story and has a plot |
| ballad | a type of narrative poem that is usually songlike since it has a regualr rhythm and pattern |
| lyric peotry | peotry that expresses a speaker's emotions or thoughts and does not tell a story |
