QuestionAnswer
Aphorism A brief forceful and normally concise statement of an opinion or truth. Ex. Traffic lights are always red while in a hurry.
Assonance When the vowel sound in words with different contiences are repeated. Ex. Jake cannot Skate
Asyndeton The writing of sentences without conjunctions. Ex. Live, Laugh, Love.
Catachresis Incorrect use of words for effect. Ex. I literally died.
Connotation A certain emotion association with a word or phrase. Ex. Instead of curious; weird.
Epanalepsis Repeating the same word, clause, or phrase in the beginning and end. Ex. Nothing is worse than doing nothing.
Alliteration A Figure that emphasizes the sound of the beginning consonant sound in two or more words in a sentence Ex. Teacher Taught me Time Tables
Allusion A figure that casually references something such as a famous person, historical event, place, or work of art. Generally, the reference is well-known.
Analogy A figure that contains a similarity between two things to make a point
Anaphora Repetition of a word or phrase in two or more verses, clauses, or sentences.
Anesis Adding a sentence that diminishes the meaning of what has previously been said.
Antimetabole Words in a phrase or sentence is repeated exactly or closely in reverse order in the next phrase or sentence.
Antithesis A figure which contains two contrasting ideas which unbalance the sentence.
Epizeucis 2 or more words repeated after eachother.
Metaphor comparioson between 2 unlike things sharing something in common
epistrophe when multiple sentences in a row end the same.
hyperbole exaggerating something to make a point
metonymy when one word or phrase is in place of another because it is closely associated
euphemismos used to change an originally unpleasant or repulsive phrase into a pleasing one
oxymoron 2 words that are used together that usually contradict
paradox a true statement that contradicts itself
parallelism a succession of smilar phrases in a sentence.
personifications giving inaminate objects human characteristics.
polysedeton the repetitive use of a conjunction
rhetorical question a question with no real answer
scesis onomaton a string of phrases with the same meaning.
sententia summarizes a snetnce with a punch.
simile a comparison using like or as
syploce the repitition of the beginning and ending in a sentence
syllogism a deductive argument with 3 reasons. major premis minor premis and conclusion.
synecdoche a figure of speech wherin part something represents the whole. Ex. A hospital did this.
