S&V Agreement

Subject Verb Agreement, Mr. Potts 3R AP Language class

QuestionAnswer
The indefinite pronouns anyone, everyone, someone, no one, nobody are always Singular
If your sentence compounds a positive and a negative subject and one is plural, the other singular, the verb should agree with the positive subject. For example, The department members but not the chair have decided not to teach on Valentine's Day.
All, and Some are plural when refering to things that you can count
"Kara Wolters, together with her teammates, _________ a formidable opponent on the basketball court." Does Present or Presents go in the blank? Present, because even though "teammates" is plural, the word presents is used more often when describing a single person.
The conjunction or does not conjoin (as and does) when... when nor or or is used the subject closer to the verb
"There is no reason for this." Why is this sentence wrong? Because the word "is" CANNOT be the subject of a sentence.
Verbs in the present tense for third-person, singular subjects (he, she, it and anything those words can stand for) .... have s-endings.
A reflexive pronoun is a pronoun that is preceded by the noun or pronoun to which it refers
singular reflexive pronouns are myself, yourself, himself ,herself, itself
yourselves, ourselves ,themselves are plural reflexive pronouns
Reflexive pronouns have two functions. They act as intensifiers, and... objects of verbs, verbals (e.g., infinitives), or prepositions when the receiver of the action or the object of the preposition is the same
