Adding and Muplication
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Commutative Property of Addition | when adding 1, order does not matter 4 + 5 = 5 + 4 a + b = b + a |
| Commutative Property of Multiplication | when multiplying, order does not matter 8 x 6 = 6 x 8 a * b = b * a |
| Associative Property of Addition | changing the grouping symbol in addition, does not change the sum (7 + 2) + 5 = 7 + (2 + 5) a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c |
| Associative Property of Multiplication | changing the grouping of the factors does not change the product (2 * 3) * 4 = 2(3 * 4) (a * b) * c = a * ( b * c) |
| Additive Inverse (opposite of a number) | if you add a number to its number, additive inverse = 0 8 + (-8) = 0 a + (-a) = 0 |
| Multiplicative Inverse | when you multiply a fraction by a number product is 1 1/2 * 2 = 1 a * 1/a = 1 |
| Additive Identity | sum of a number and 0 is the number 8 + 0 = 8 B + 0 =B |
| Multiplicative Identity | product of a number times 1 is the number 9 * 1 = 9 C *1 = C |
| Multiplicative Property of Zero | any number multiplied by 0 is 0 1 * 0 = 0 a * 0 = 0 |
| Distributive Property | multiply the factor outside the parentheses by both numbers on the inside 4(2 + 3) = 4(2) + 4(3) a(b + c) = a(b) + a(c) |
