| metaphor | a figure of spech that makes a direct comparison between two different things that have something in common. does not use the words like or as |
| alliteration | the repetition of the same consonant sound in words occuring near one another to show emphasis |
| repetition | when words or cetain phrases are repeated for a strong emphasis by the author |
| grim humor | topics and events that are usually treated seriously (death, sickness, madness, terror, war) are treated in a humorous or satirical manner |
