math vocabulary

Algebraic Expression A mathematical phrase involving at least one variable and sometimes numbers and operation symbols.
Constant A quantity that does not change its value.
Equation A mathematical sentence that contains an equals sign.
Exponent The number of times a number or expression (called base) is used as a factor of repeated multiplication. Also called the power.
Inverse Operations Pairs of operations that undo each other; addition &subtraction; multiplication & division.
Order of Operations The rules to be followed when simplifying expressions: 1)grouping, 2)exponents, 3) Multiplication and Division (in order from left to right), 4) Addition and Subtraction (in order from left to right.
Proportion An equation which states that two ratios are equal.
Variable A letter or symbol used to represent a number.
