Protiens are built from simpler organic compounds tht are called: amino acids
What element is contained in protein that is not contained in carbs or lipids? Nitrogen
How many amino acids are "indispensable" for humans and must be consumed in the diet? 9
A protein that contains all the indispensable amino acids in the correcct proportion and ration is considered what type of protein? Complete
An exception to a dietary protein or one that is an animal protein but with little dietary protein source when eaten alone is called? Gelatin
What is the primary function of protein in the diet? To supply material for growth and maintenance.
What are the end products of proteins; they are absorbed as? Amino acids
Protein catabolism would be increased in conditions such as illness. True
What phase of metabolism makes growth and repair possible? Anabolism
What are the end products of fat digestion? Glycerol and fatty acids
What are the end products of protein digestion? Amino acids
The sum aof all the chemical changes that an organism performs to maintain life and produce energy is the result of what process? Metabolism
What are complementary proteins? They provide higher quality protein when eaten together.
If the excretion of nitrogen exceeds the nitrogen intake, what is the condition called? Negative nitrogen balance
What are triglycerides made up of? Glycerol and fatty acids
What is an essential fatty acid? One that the body cannont manufacture for itself.
What does the process of hydrogeneration do? Adds hydrogen (liquid fats become solid fats)
Are liver, sausage and cheese are foods that contain cholesterol? Yes
Are increased stress and obesity are risks for heart disease? Yes
A type of fat associated with a high risk of atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries is? Saturated fat
Would margarine be considered a food relatively high in saturated fat when compared to vegetable oils? Yes
What is the recommended RDA for protein intake for a healthy adult? 0.8 g/kg of desirable weight per day
What are the functions of fat in the body? Insulation, temperature regulation, formation of cell membrane structure.
The recommended % of dietary energy intake from fat should be no more than? 20-35%
Given these foods: strawberries, milk, raisin toast or lard. Which would provide linolenic acid? Milk. It is an animal protein, a fatty acid. The other choices given are carbohydrates or saturated fats.
We do not need to consume foods with cholesterol because it is synthesized or made in the body. What body part makes it? The liver.
In the diet, the greatest proportion of indispensable amino acids is provided by what type of food? Animal products.
Does protein play an important role in the body in defense against disease and infection. Yes. It produces antibodies.
Are eggs a food that has high quality protein? Yes
List some foods that are high in protein Breast milk, cows milk, eggs, cheese and meat, soybeans.
Describe negative nitrogen balance. Occurs when the body takes in less nitrogen than it excretes. This means that the body has an inadequate protein intake and is loosing nitrogen by breaking down more tissue than it is building up.
What 4 elements make up the chemical compound "protein"? Hydrogen, carbon, oxygen and nitrogen.
If the excretion of nitrogen exceeds the nitrogen intake, the conditon is called what? Negative nitrogen balance
