What is Advertisement Attracting attention by paying to have advertisements in various ways (billboards, websities, broadcast) to sell something
What is publicity? The act of enhancing a product, person, or organization.
What is propaganda The act of gaining mass approval or persuading people by spreading rumors or ideas which is most often bias
Entertainment something that elicits pleasure, diversion or amusement. Often a performance of some king
Raw INformation Bypasses all filters, has first hand information that is not analyzed or interpreted in any way.

What is Verification? COnfirmation of information to see if it is true and accurate
What is independence? When it is free of all 3rd party self interest and is not affiliated with anything. Has conscious effort to set aside pre-existing beliefs and a system of checks and balances
What is accountability? Responsible or answerable to one's work.
What is news and who decides? News is any "scoop" of information that makes a reporter's primal heart beat faster. - GOes through V.I.A
What are four factors that determine news? Universal News Drivers Editorial Judgement Audience Profits and Competition
What are the 10 Universal News Drivers? -importance -timeliness -proximity -magnitude -prominence -conflict -human interest -change -relevance -unusualness
What is Editorial Judgement?: Editors place stories on a matrix deciding how important a story will be and how much interest it'll garner
How do audience determine news? What it needs vs. what it wants
How do you tell the difference between news reporting and opinion journalism? News report: contains opinions from experts participants, or witnesses Opinion- view, judgement, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter -Language and Labeling
What are certain language and labeling that distinguishes news to be opinion journalism? What is the tone of the story? How is it labeled? Op-ed or editorial? Is it in first person statements? are there exaggerations or superlatives?
Why should you care which is which? goal of news reporting is to give you information you need for you fourth estate role - goal of opinion journalism is to help you make up your mind about something
