literary terms

| metaphor | a comparison of two unlike things, not using like or as; it equates them equally |
| personification | giving animals, objects, or even ideas "human" qualities |
| imagery | a description by an author that appeals to the senses; you can visualize, hear, feel, taste, for example, what the author is describing in your minds eye |
| hyperbole | an extreme exaggeration to an absurb for emphasis |
| onomatopoeia | words that imitate the sounds they describe, such as bang or buzz |
| allusion | is a passing reference in a work of literature to another literary or historical work, figure(character), or event, or to a literary passage |
| irony | an unexpected twist or ending; the difference between what is said and what is meant |
| symbolism | an object, action, or event that represents something beyond itself |
| dialect | the language and/or word pronunciation specific to a region or group |
| dialogue | the spoken words used by interacting characters |
| foreshadowing | clues about events yet to happen/occur |
| sarcasm | irony that is condescending to the party (ies) to whom it is directed |
