Vocabulary Essential for 7th Grade Math

| circumference | the distance around a circle or its perimeter. |
| diameter | the distance across a circle through its center. |
| difference | the solution to a subtraction problem. |
| dimensions | the measurement of a figure's edges (length, width, height). |
| equation | a mathematical sentence using numbers and/or variables where both sides are equal |
| evaluate | to calculate the answer to an expression or equation |
| expression | a combination of numbers, operations, and/or variables with no equal sign. |
| justify | using numbers AND words to support your answer. |
| mean | the mathematical average of the data; found by finding the sum of all the data and dividing by the number of data pieces. |
| median | the middle number when data is arranged in numerical order. |
| mode | the number most repeated in a set of data. |
| perimeter | the distance around a geometric figure or the sum of all its sides. |
| product | the solution to a multiplication problem. |
| quotient | the solution to a division problem. |
| radius | the distance from the center of a circle to its edge. |
| range | the difference between the greatest and the least pieces of data. |
| rate | a ratio that compares two numbers with different kinds of units (for example, gallons:hour, price:item, meters:second) |
| ratio | the comparison of two numbers that can be written in various ways. |
| reasonableness | showing reason or sound judgement; a "sensible" choice. |
| sum | the solution to an addition problem. |
| Venn diagram | overlapping circles used to organize data into categories where some information may overlap. |
| volume | the amount of space a three-dimensional object contains, measured in cubic units. |
