First Quarter Terms

| flat character | one dimensional, reader does not know a lot of sides to this minor character |
| round character | well-developed, reader knows thoughts, feelings, actions, and different sides to this character |
| dynamic character | based on something in the plot this major character goes through a change |
| static character | this character stays the same throughout the story |
| protagonist | main character that the plot revolves around |
| antagonist | a person, animal, or force of nature that works against the protagonist |
| indirect characterization | when the author shows the reader things about the character through speech, actions, thoughts, etc. |
| direct characterization | when the narrator directly tells the reader something about the character |
| unreliable narrator | like in "Cask of Amontillado" where the narrator was a bit crazed and the reader can't necessarily trust everything from his point of view |
| fatal flaw | a weakness in the character that results in his or her death |
| General Zaroff's fatal flaw | over-confidence |
| Mr. Eckels' fatal flaw | not following directions; he stepped off the path |
| imagery | words, phrases, descriptions that appeal to all five senses |
| tone | the attitude that the author puts into the writing |
| mood | the feeling that the reader gets from reading the literature based on word choice, sentence structures, imagery, etc. |
| plot | chain of events in a story |
| exposition | beginning of the story when the reader is introduced to characters and setting and given background information |
| inciting incident | the first major conflict or complication that begins the rising action |
| rising action | the building of tension and suspense through conflicts and complications |
| climax | the highest point of tension |
| falling action | shows the results of the important action that happened at the climax |
| resolution | when the outcome of the story seems to be worked out |
| denouement | the final resolution; unraveling of the knot |
| conflict | a struggle between opposing forces |
| internal conflict | a struggle that occurs within a character |
| external conflict | involves a character pitted against an outside force, such as nature, society, a physical obstacle, or another character |
