Affinity the degree to which people like or appreciate one another. usually nonverbally
altruistic lies deception intended to be unmalicious, or even helpful, to the person to whom it is told
Breadth (of self disclosure model) the range of topics about which an individual discloses
Content message a message that communicates information about the subject being discussed
contextually interpersonal communication any communication that occurs between two individuals
contro the social need to influence others
depth (or self disclosure) the level of personal information a person reveals on a particular topic
developmental models (of relational maintenance) these models propose that nature of communication is different in various stages of interpersonal relationships
dialectical model (of relational maintenance) a model claiming that, throughout their lifetime, people in virtually all interpersonal relationships must deal with equally important, simultaneous, and opposing forces such as connection and autonomy. predictibility and novelty, and openness vs privacy
dialectical tensions inherent conflicts that arise when two opposing or incompatible forces exist simultaneously
equivocal language language with more than one likely interpretation
Immediacy the degree of interest and attraction we feel toward and communicate to others.. usually expressed nonverbally
intimacy a state of closeness between two or more people. intimacy can be manifested in diff ways; physically, intellectually, emotionally, and via shared activities
johari window a model that describes the relationship between self disclosure and self awareness
metacommunication messages usually relational that refer to other messages; communication about communication
qualitatively interpersonal communication interaction in which people treats one another as unique individuals, regardless of the context in which the interaction occurs or the number of people involved. contrasted with interpersonal communication
relational message a message that expresses the socioal relationship between two or more individuals
respect the degree to which we hold others in esteem
self disclosure the process of deliberately revealing information about oneself that is significant and that would not normally be know by others
social penetration model a model describing how intimacy can be achieved via the breadth and depth of self disclosure
