termsdefinitions
scanning reader searches quickly for a specific word, phrase, or piece of information
setting time and place of a story
short story brief account in prose of fictional events
simile comparing two seemingly unalike items using the words "like" or "as" (type of figurative language)
skimming preview a piece of work by glancing quickly through it (a method of reading)
stage directions In drama (plays) these are the writer's instructions for performing the work and a description of characters, ations, and settings.
staging acting, costumes, sets, lighting, sound effects and other special effects that bring a play to life.
stanza A group of lines forming a unit in a poem
stereotype A kind of charcter who has only a few personality traits and is more a category than a real, individualized person (a popular belief about specific social groups or types of individuals)
suspense The reader's interest in how the story will end
theme central idea of a literary work, often a lesson learned about life
thesis statement sentence or group of sentences expressing the central idea in a work of nonfiction
title name of a work of literature
topic sentence a sentence at the start of paragraph of nonfiction writing that expresses the main idea of that paragraph
