| Alliteration | the repition of initial consonant sounds |
| Allusion | an indirect reference to another work of literature |
| Aside | a whisper to another character so that other characters can't hear |
| Chorus | a single actor who recites the prologue |
| Couplet | any two line stanza that contains a complete thought; usually ryhmed |
| Foil | a character who provides a striking contrast to the main character thus calling attention to certain traits of the main character |
| Foreshadowing | giving clues in the story as to what will happen next creating suspense |
| Irony | a contrast between what appears to be and what really is |
| Metaphor | compairison between two unlike thing without using like or as |
| Oxymoron | a figure of speech that produces an effeft by seeming self contridictory |
| Personification | a figure in which human characteristics are assigned to nonhuman things |
| Prologue | an intro speech often in verse calling attention to the theme(s) of a play |
| Prose | the oridinary for of spoken or written language which doesn't have a regular rhythmic pattern |
| Pun | a play on several words that sound simmilar but mean different things |
| Simile | Two unlike things compared with like or as |
| Soliloguy | speech of a character in a play delivered while the speaker is alone that informs the auideince that which is going on in the character's mind |
| Sonnet | a lyric poem of fourteen lines |
| Tragedy | a dramatic composition dealing with a serious or somber theme; ususally arranged with death or regret |
| Tragic flaw | flaw of a character that drives the character to commit a tragedy |
