Complex Sentences Add more clauses and phrases
Common errors fragments, run ons, misplaced modifyers, non parallel construction
Fragments Don't have both clauses and cannot stand alone
Types of Fragments Just a dependent clause, or ACT asks you to put the fragment into a sentence
Clues Check the answer choices to determine the sentence structure and if it is wrong
No change Is not always right. but is right less than 1/4 of the time
Commas splices 2 independent clauses are put together in one sentence with only a comma
Run on Does not have a comma but puts 2 independent clauses together
Run ons Often are very long
Misplaced modyfyers If the modifyer is too far away from what it is modifying
Construction shift Similar to modyfyers so watch out
Non- parallel construction 2 major types of construction errors
Non parralled Involve lists of things, of nouns or verbs
parallel construction series of nouns
Apostrophes Indicate possession, or mark for missing letters in a word
