Sentences and punctuaiton

| Conjunction | Combines 2 clauses |
| Commas | Separate independent clauses |
| First clause | Cannot stand alone |
| Modyfying | Commas are also used to modify |
| Dashes | Another form of commas, used to separate |
| Restrictive Clauses | essential for the sentence |
| Nonrestrictive Clauses | Not essential for sentence structure |
| Dashes | Help with isolating clauses |
| Passages | Check for answer choices with only difference in punctuation and dash marks available |
| Colons | Usually used after a complete statement to introduce detail |
| Colons | related with Independent clauses |
| Complex Sentences | Add more clauses and phrases |
| Common errors | fragments, run ons, misplaced modifyers, non parallel construction |
| Fragments | Don't have both clauses and cannot stand alone |
| Types of Fragments | Just a dependent clause, or ACT asks you to put the fragment into a sentence |
| Clues | Check the answer choices to determine the sentence structure and if it is wrong |
| No change | Is not always right. but is right less than 1/4 of the time |
| Commas splices | 2 independent clauses are put together in one sentence with only a comma |
| Run on | Does not have a comma but puts 2 independent clauses together |
| Run ons | Often are very long |
| Misplaced modyfyers | If the modifyer is too far away from what it is modifying |
| Construction shift | Similar to modyfyers so watch out |
| Non- parallel construction | 2 major types of construction errors |
| Non parralled | Involve lists of things, of nouns or verbs |

| Apostrophes | Indicate possession, or mark for missing letters in a word |
