Photoshop Vocabulary

Vocabulary Words

Photoshop CS3 a popular image editing software application produced by Adobe.
Digital image pictures in electronic form.
Work area gray area where you edit your photo.
Workspace gray work area, options bar, and palettes.
Open bring a copy of the file from the storage location to the screen.
Edit make changes to the photo.
Tool tip short on-screen note associated with the object to which you are pointing.
Document window displays the active open file.
Title bar displays the name of the file, the magnification, and the color mode.
Display area portion of the document window that displays the photo or image.
Magnification the percentage of enlargement or reduction on the screen.
Scroll bars used to move the image up, down, left, and right.
Palette a collection of graphically displayed choices and commands.
Menu list of commands you can use to perform tasks.
Submenu secondary menu that displays when a menu has an arrow to its right edge.
Options bar displayed below the menu bar. Contains buttons that allow you to perform tasks more quickly than using the menu bar.
Save store images on a storage device.
File type the internal characteristics of digital files
File extension the three or four letter specification after the file name. Used to identify what program was used to create the file.
Zoom allows you to focus on certain parts of the photo.
Navigator palette used to change the view of your artwork using a thumbnail display.
View box the colored box in the Navigator palette which outlines the currently viewable area in the window also called the proxy view box.
Crop trim away some of the photo.
Rule of thirds used when placing the focus of interest in a photo.
Border a decorative edge on a photo.
Smoothing adjusts the radius of the pixels at the inner corners of the border creating a rounded edge.
Fill blending a color or pattern into a selection area.
Opacity the level at which you can see through the color
Pixel individual dot of light that is the basic unit used to create digital images.
Resize to scale or change the dimensions of the photo.
Resolution the number of pixels per inch, printed on a page.
