Terms for SHS Chapter 1 Algebra II Test

Associative Property (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) (ab)c = a(bc) You can change the groups (doesn't change the order of the numbers)
Commutative Property a+b = b+a (You can replace a+b with b+a) ab = ba (You can replace ab with ba)
Identity Property a + 0 = a (When you ADD 0 you get the identical value.) a x 1 = a (When you X by 1 you get the identical value.)
Inverse Property a + (-a) = 0 (Opposites are inverses.) a x 1/a = 1 (Reciprocals are inverses.)
Distributive Property a(b + c) = ab + ac (a + b)c = ac + bc
To convert miles to feet multiply by 5280 feet / 1 mile
To convert hours to minutes Multiply by 60 min / 1 hour
|2x + 3| = 7 2x + 3 = 7 OR -(2x + 3) = 7
|3x - 1| < 5 3x - 1 < 5 AND -(3x - 1) < 5 Shortcut: -5 < 3x - 1 < 5
|6x - 3| > 21 6x - 3 > 21 OR -(6x - 3) > 21 Shortcut: 6x - 3 > 21 OR 6x - 3 < -21
What is the formula for distance d = r t
Solve: 5m - 2 = -m - 2 m = 0
Solve for x: 3xy + x = 12 x = 12/(3y + 1)
