| pious (adj.) | Having or showing reverence for God; religious. Sentence- The pious man made it a rule for his family to go to church every Sunday. |
| repousse(adj.) | Raised in relief by hammering on the reverse side of thin metal. Sentence- The repousse vase had been difficult to make for the silversmith. |
| polutice (n.) | A soft, moist mass of mustard, herbs, etc. applied to the body as a medicine. Sentence- The old healer used a polutice to cool down his fever. |

| indolent (adj.) | Disliking work; lazy; idle. Sentence- The indolent boy did not help his family with the moving process. |
| diffident (adj.) | Lacking in self-confidence, shy. Sentence- The diffident boy did not have many friends. |
| assuage(v.) | Calm or soothe; make less intense; make easier or milder. Sentence- He assuaged his daughter by promising her a barrel of candy. |
| nonchalance (n.) | Cool unconcern; indifferent. Sentence- His nonchalance caused him not to be invited to the community party. |
| effigy (n.) | An image or a statue usually of a person; images burned or hanged to show dislike or contempt. Sentence- A battered stone effigy of an old man stood at the far end of the manor. |
| enigmatic (adj.) | Like a riddle, baffling, puzzling. Sentence- The enigmatic boy was not understood by his teachers or classmates. |
