| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| chemistry | is the science that investigates and explains the structure and properties of matter |
| matter | is anything that takes up space and has mass |
| mass | is the measure of amount of matter that an object contains |
| properties | characteristics and behavior of matter including the changes that matter undergoes |
| scientific model | a thinking devise that helps you understand and explain macroscopic observation |
| qualitative | what matter is made of |
| quantitative | measurement of the building blocks of matter |
| substance | matter with the same fixed composition and properties |
| mixture | combination of two or more substances in which the basic identity of each substance is not changed |
| physical change | a change in matter that does not involve a change in the identity of individual substances |
| physical properties | characteristics that a sample of matter exhibits without any changes in it's identity |
| alloys | solid solutions that contain different metals and sometimes nonmetallic substances |
| solution | a homogeneous mixture that is the same throughout; made of a solvent and a solute |
| solvent | the substance that dissolves the solute when making a solution |
| solute | substance that is being dissolved in the solvent to make a solution |
| aqueous solution | a solution in which the solvent is water |
| element | the simplest form of matter; substancet that cannot be broken down into simpler forms and retain its properties. |
| compound | a chemical combination of two or more different elements joined together in a fixed proportion |
| formula | a combination of the chemical symbols that show which elements make up a compound and the number of atoms of each element |
